Chelsea will finish off the job on the 9th May at Stamford Bridge! :D
If only we could have had Cech for the entire season, if you watched Match of the Day tonight you will have seen why.

Despite supporting Man U i would agree that we have been 2nd best for a long time and its only recently we have been playing well, but if you had Cech/Terry for the whole season i think you would have been too far ahead before we came into it.....

It's Uniteds title to lose now and I think they will win it. They look to be in good form at the moment and have been winning games that they could easily have drawn or lost - sign of champions.

No chance for the treble for either club though, I think United's 1999 efforts really were a wonderous one-off. What a season that was!

What about Liverpool's Mickey Mouse treble from a couple of years later?
Pablo
2nd April 2007, 06:01 PM
Yeah, it's not the REAL treble though is it... also they only had Alaves in the UEFA Cup, Birmingham City on pens in the League Cup Final and Wycombe in the FA Cup semi. United won the Premiership, the European Cup (unbeaten and having to play Inter Milan 2 Legs, Juventus 2 Legs, Bayern 3 times, Barcelona 2 times) and the FA Cup semi which went to a replay was one of the greatest games of the 90's.

3 trophies make a treble if you ask me. And they won a treble in 1984 as well. Plus i think they actually played more games to win the 2001 treble than Utd did in 99. But who cares, as i ask all Utd fans, what's the time. Oh yeah 5-2

Sorry Woody but United's treble was three important trophies and won in style the hard way.

Don't remember saying it wasn't more important did i Shandy. But 3 equates to a treble by my reckoning. So I'll have a treble if your buying.
Being such a big Liverpool fan it pains me to say it but yes Utd's treble was a fantastic achievement. Probably won't ever be seen again. But even the most ardent Utd fans would admit they had some luck along the way that season. Last minute winner and Bergkamp saved penalty in the FA cup semi. Two late goals at home to Liverpool when trailing in an earlier round of the FA Cup and too cap it all an absolutely useless performance in the European Cup Final when they pick pocketed it from Bayern Munich's Overcoat.
Fair play they were spawny that year, but they've not done much in Europe since which is why Pablo is right about no treble this year. I reckon Roma will knock them out.

Yes you do need to have luck to get such a rack of results.
Treble yours may be, but we're talking Krakmaninov Vodka versus Absolut in terms of quality

In 2002 United got to the Semi Finals and were only narrowly beaten by away goals and a late goal for Leverkusen in the 2nd leg, bu apart from that not too much. And also United will beat Roma over two legs, they have a few good players (Chivu, Mexes, De Rossi). Totti is now average, United will have too much quality for them.
Also why do L'pool fans walk around saying '5 times, 5 times' all the time. It gets really boring after a while.

It does indeed Pablo. Recently the Champions League has become a joke in my opinion, how a team that finishes 4th in their respective division enters a Tournament called the Champions League is beyond me. When Liverpool had their last triumph in Europe they finished 4th when they qualified and then 5th the season they were victorious in Istanbul. This means that the 5th Best team in England became the so called Best team in Europe, totally insane.
Yes, Liverpool are the most successful side in English Football History, however they haven't won the English Championship in 20-odd years, take what you will out of that.

I think Utd were runners up in the 97-98 season when they won the champions league in 99. And it's 17 years since Liverpool last won the championship Simon.

Did I say finishing runner up didn't merit a place in the Champions League. No, I said finishing in 4th didn't merit a place in the Champions League. And plus, I realise you last won the Championship in the 1989-1990 season, but it was a rough approximation. Plus, it is still an absolute age for a club as big as Liverpool not to win the League.
I suppose I can't really talk about length between winning League titles. Chelsea had to wait 50 years before we emulated Ted Drake's achievements in 1955.

Recently the Champions League has become a joke in my opinion.
On the subject of European competitions, the UEFA Cup has become a complete farce. There are 2 qualification rounds, a first round, Group Stages where the top three go through, the a round of 32,16, Quarter's, Semi's, Final. Also teams from the Champion's League drop in at the 32' Round, which makes it even harder for the teams who have played so many games already.
Newcastle Utd. had to play 12 games, starting in August and didn't even make it into the Quarter Finals!
On the subject of the Champion's League, I think it should be the Champion's of the Leagues that go into the Champion's League and the Runner's up go into the Qualifying for it.
Teams who finish 3rd, 4th and 5th go into the UEFA, with the teams that didn't qualify for the Champion's League and it should be a straight knock-out.
Also bring back the Cup Winners' Cup!
Phew!:)

I agree Pablo. Both you and Simon have correctly pointed out that UEFA are useless and couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery. European competitions are a farce. But in this day and age money talks and dictates who plays in what competition etc! As we all now agree on something we should end this useless debate because I'm sure Michel Platini isn't listening!;)

The Champions League should just be for the champions of the respective leagues and should be in the old knockout format with the Cup Winners Cup brought back
However I will agree with everyone else that UEFA are useless

Surprise, surprise; it's all about money!
I agree, it's a farce for teams that aren't champions to be in the Champions' League, but who's going to argue for change?
Teams like Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool who, this year, are unlikely to be Champions? That would mean them missing out on their piece of the pie.
There's also the argument - which, I think, is the most valid - that why should only one team each from England, Spain, France and Germany qualify when the quality of football in these countries is much higher than that in Ireland, Wales, Scotland and some of the former Soviet countries?
But the bottom line is money. The more games they play in Europe, the richer the clubs get.
The hypocrisy comes when those self-same teams that whinge about a crowded schedule are the same that lap up the cream when it's presented to them.
Greed, greed, greed.
Pablo

The Champions League and the money involved has really ruined European Competitions. Instead of the best teams in Europe being spread over three competitions they are all in the one, so we get UEFA Cup finals between Sevilla v Middlesbrough or CSKA Moscow v Spt. Lisbon, instead of the old Inter, Bayern, Juventus, Ajax etc.
The Cup Winners' Cup, why did they get rid of it?, it was the best! Zola winning it for Chelsea v Stuttgart, Nayim from the halfway line against Arsenal and Mark Hughes taking it round the 'keeper against Barcelona!

Whole team were a joke. Fergie's fault he is either resting people for champions league (why????? if they are good enough to play for man u they can recover in 3 days) or he took portsmouth too lightly (idiot) and harry does his magic again lol.
Like i said chelsea will win it now especially with Vidic injured. Plus we have West Ham on final day, If we need say 3 points to secure title and they need 1 to stay up, wonder how they will play......
