Gloucester City may be set to lose three points as Ilkeston Town were officially wound up at the high court today. The troubled Derbyshire side failed to pay a £50k tax bill despite being given six weeks breathing space by the courts in July and were put into receivership today. The news means that should the Conference [...] (http://sportglos.co.uk/?p=1624)

It's about time Clubs had to put their cards on the table before the season begins, proving they are a financially viable concern. Clubs who are patently not, should not be allowed to begin the season. It is bloody frustrating when hard won points are deducted (Though i suppose at least we are one of the 4 clubs who got their gate receipts!)
Can they not enter administration, and take the 10pt hit, even if it is simply delaying the inevitable?

I think once you are wound up that's it, isn't it? It's a compulsary liquidation, you have to cease trading, and you have to be trading to be allowed to participate in the league...there's no way back from this decision.

I think it is poor that a club has been allowed to start the season when there was a danger of them being wound up. Yes a shame for their fans but not good for the league.

According to the BSN forum this debt was just the tip of the iceberg.
It's hard to really know what to think, they're in such dire straits yet look at the calibre of some of the players they had at Whaddon the other week. Redditch are supposedly managing their off the field problems with a team on £500 p/w yet Ilkeston were paying out £3000.

Very bad news for Ilkeston, and bad news for us as well losing the 3 points.
If they're looking for positives, they should just look at our league and see how many "phoenix" teams are prospering after going bust just a few years back. You get to keep your fans, probably your ground, and work your way back up. Merthyr Town are having a stonking first season by the looks of things. In some ways it makes me a bit jealous/bitter, but in most ways, not.
If we're looking for positives from losing those 3 points, at least they managed to fulfill their fixture at Whaddon, which means we got the gate receipts that a lot of other teams won't be getting. Also, as we haven't been to their place, we haven't spent out on players' (and fans'?) coach travel for a match that later vanished.
Good luck to them in the future. Apologies for taking such a materialistic view of the whole situation. I really do wish them the best of luck and hope they bounce back soon.

Aren't there two other clubs on restricted squads of 16 because of their financial problems? The conference management need s bomb up their ass, and sort these teams out before the season starts!

Ilkeston were one of them, Hinckley are the other. To be fair what else can the leagues / FA do at the outset other than this 16 man rule which seems to be new? Apparently Ilkeston were down to their bare 11 players for Saturdays game.

I think Hinckley only had 12 players the other week. For me they should either of done what Redditch have done or do what Grays did and drop down a league or two so the costs are less and they can pay the money they owe easier.
Neil
8th September 2010, 18:54
Does anyone really think that Ilkeston wanted to pay back the money that they owed? Redditch are a fine example of how to exist by limited means, they might lose more often than they like but they have more chance of being in the BSBN in May than Ilkeston now do.

It becomes a total farce when you take all the costs involved in running a Club. We might as well not travel away, save ourselves the time and expense, give away the 3 pts and concentrate on home matches, for at the end of the day there will be not relegation spots as several clubs will have gone into liquidation !

this is happening way too often now. grays did the right thing at the end of last season but were then relegated another league because the fa decided they were resigning from football altogether, so your punished for being sensible.
feel sorry for the fans, the last time gateshead played them we had pool and darts competitions before the match. a few of their fans also came to mansfield for the pay what you want game last season.
i think their planning an appeal, but it doesnt look good for them, or citys three points.

I don't want us to stay up just because a team has gone out of the league (or deducted points), I want us to stay up on merit. We will do this year because we are easily good enough, and we've done it on a budget within our means.
While sad for the fans I'm sure in a few year when the pheonix club climbs through the leagues then they will enjoy the success, and attract newer fans with it, but as a longstanding fan I would wonder whether it was worth it as they just bump their head on the ceiling at some stage.
As well as the positives already mentioned I'm glad we've already played them, as the way we played that day gave us our first points and a home confidence that we've kicked on from, and it gives the players and manager an extra competitive game to learn from.

A Shame for Gloucester losing the 3 points; but a bigger shame is that Ilkeston Town have been expelled from the BSN league.

That's my birthday. I only get a birthday on a Saturday once every 6/7 years, so I won't be happy if we don't get ot the first round of the FA Cup! Birthday football is brilliant.
