For this club to progress will can't afford to be flooded every 6 or 7 years, we need a move from Meadow Park IMO.

i feel really sorry for you guys. all the ambition and work the supporters, management and playing squad have been putting in has hit a real dead :brickwall: i hope you can get this sorted as soon as possible. how long do you reckon meadow park will be out of action until it is cleaned and checked? maybe you could do a temporary groundshare with us at the new lawn? i'm guessing you will play no more pre season home games but i think your squad still have shortwood utd and frome town away 2 gear up for the new season. maybe the friendly we have against you could be switched to our place? i'm saddened by this news, i hope meadow park is up and running again as soon as possible :(

http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/news/sunday/2007/07/22/born-on-the-m5-flood-98487-19493813/

BORN ON THE M5 FLOOD
Midwife delivers tot in caravan on motorway as rescue crews tackle 16ft flood.

A BABY was born to a mum trapped in a caravan on the waterlogged M5 yesterday - delivered by a midwife stranded in the same jam.

The terrified woman was among thousands stuck on the motorway all night as parts of Britain were swamped by 16ft floods in what is set to be the wettest July on record.

As she went into labour, her husband desperately ran from car to car asking for help. By pure chance a midwife was trapped in her vehicle just two cars away and rushed to help.

Another couple also caught in the traffic gave up their caravan while they waited for an ambulance to arrive. The woman gave birth at 5.45am as an air-ambulance struggled to land nearby due to the violent storms. Mother and baby were eventually airlifted to Cheltenham General Hospital.

It was one of a series of amazing tales of courage after a month's rain fell in two hours on Friday. Insurers estimated the cost of the damage could be £2.5billion. Prime Minister Gordon Brown has promised local authorities they will be given 100 per cent compensation for the costs of dealing with emergencies.

He praised the rescue efforts, saying: "The response of the emergency services has been superb. The response of our armed forces who have joined them has been also excellent."

Hundreds of people, including families going away for the start of the school hols, were stranded on the M5 for up to 17 hours as the tailbacks stretched 40 miles from Bristol to Worcester. Anne-Marie Walsh left the Lake District at 8am on Friday to go to Devon in a bus with 50 people - and was trapped until 6am yesterday. She said: "Morale was kept high by people singing but we were on that bus an awful long time."

Motorists were forced to clamber on to the top of cars and caravans before being rescued by firefighters and lifeboat crews. Traffic only started moving again at 6.30am yesterday and more than 30 abandoned vehicles had to be towed on to the hard shoulder.

Worst-hit town was Evesham, Worcs, where the River Avon burst its banks. The local fire brigade said floods were as high as 16ft (5.11m), the worst they had ever tackled.

"A severe flood warning for the area is only four metres," said a spokesman.

Dad Darren Key, 33, waded through neck-high water to get his one-year-old son to safety. He said: "One minute the water was about knee-high and because we live on a first-floor flat, we were not so concerned.

"But it suddenly started creeping up the stairs. I had to lean out of the window and yell for a lifeboat to come and pick us up."

Police warned holidaymakers to avoid Worcestershire and Herefordshire for 24 hours.

Pershore in Worcestershire was also badly hit with 5.7 inches of rain (14.54cm) in 25 hours. Emergency services received more than 3,000 calls during the latest crisis, which followed horrendous flooding in Hull and South Yorks. Meanwhile bread supplies were in danger of running out in Worcester last night as panicking shoppers stocked up on essentials.

Ron Taylor, manager of the Co-op in Henwick Road, said the store had rung up a usual whole day's takings by 1pm.

Three 80-year-olds were among those winched to safety by helicopter in Tewkesbury, Worcs. Around 100 others were airlifted from Gloucester, Evesham and Tewkesbury.

More than 2,000 people spent Friday night in hastily set-up refuge centres in Gloucester.

Keith Butler, commercial manager at Gloucester City Football Club, told how he and 90 others spent Friday night in the canteen of the Morrisons supermarket in Tewkesbury after they were stranded.

By last night, seven RAF rescue helicopters had taken part in operations across the region in 24 hours, believed to be the largest-ever deployment in peacetime. In the Gloucester area, a total of 52 missions were flown.

RAF Sea King helicopters rescued dozens of people and fire brigade boats were sent to help more than 400 people in Buckingham.

More than 300 homes were flooded in Bampton, Oxon, and homeowners were given 1,000 sandbags as firefighters pumped out water. In Ledbury, Worcs, a tunnel close to the railway station was also flooded causing severe disruption to trains. Dozens of residents were also evacuated from a caravan park off the A44 at Petty Bridge, near Bromyard in Herefordshire, where the River Froome burst. Hereford and Worcester fire brigade said they had dealt with more than 1,000 emergency calls since the floods started on Friday. A spokesman said they were also taking calls from areas such as Kent because the system was so overloaded in the south of England.

Police said thieves had broken into abandoned cars in Herefordshire & Worcestershire.

Emergency teams were yesterday bracing themselves for the Rivers Wye and Avon and smaller rivers to cause more problems. Families living close to the River Ouse in Bucks were told to prepare for evacuation yesterday as it threatened to burst its banks.

At least 200 vehicles were also stranded in Hereford's Merton Meadow car park. Council chiefs helped move vehicles and handed out wellies. Alex Mackie, from Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue, said: "We're unable to get to some of the areas because of vehicles that have been abandoned."

Firefighters last night warned children to stay away from floodwater because it may contain sewage and dangerous chemicals.

The post was disrupted, including deliveries of the new Harry Potter book. A Devon Royal Mail manager said: "One driver was stuck on the M5 for nine hours. One motorist actually knocked on his window to ask him if he had any Harry Potter books on board that they could read!" The Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon was flooded as water rushed into its basement. Spokesman Dean Asker said Saturday's performance of Macbeth had to be cancelled, adding: "It's a shame we're not performing The Tempest!"

Schoolchildren and staff from Blackwood school in Newport, Gwent spent the night in a leisure centre in Ludlow. RAF helicopters winched 60 stranded people from rooftops in Sedgeberrow, Worcs.

Two people died in Friday's monsoon, including a biker trapped under a caravan after a crash on a rain-lashed road in Windsor Great Park, Berks. And a man of 64 died from head injuries when he slipped tackling floods at his home in Alston, Cumbria. Flooding worsened in Lincolnshire and sirens went off in Louth warning of rising water levels. The Rivers Severn, Avon, Arrow, Dene, Tame, Great Ouse and Teme all burst their banks.

And there were delays at Heathrow after 141 flights were cancelled on Friday.

A further inch (25mm) of rain is set to hit tomorrow, say the Met Office, with Wales getting the next bout. The average for the whole of July is normally 11/2ins (35mm) - with a previous record of 145mm in 1988. Up to 16 flood warnings were in place last night - 13 in the Midlands and three in Anglia region - as well as 70 general flood warnings.

I finished work at 1pm on Saturday and made my way up to Gloucester to pick up the kids, having seen the amount of traffic heading south I decided to stay in Gloucester for a couple of hours, even though I left at 16.20 it still took the best part of 2.5 hours to get back down to Weston - the traffic jams started at Micheal Woods service station and were still there when I got off the motorway at Jct21. It seems that everyone who possibly could was attempting to head south to get away from the trouble - in hindsight I don't blame them

On the city forum we want your friendly switched to TP if possible with gate receipts going to you to help with all your repair costs. Also a possible collection with the money split between you and Banbury. Don’t know what is happening about it or what will come of it but I really hope that it goes ahead at ours and we can make some decent money for you

Empty words from an empty man !

Visiting the emergency HQ, with Mr. Brain hovering in the background - doing the usual 'yes man' bit, hardly represents what is going on at grass root levels. He could have been shown MP., and might have asked 'what the hell is a football ground being sited here for'
Lets face it, we have ALL ASKED THAT QUESTION.:mad:

As I remember things Shandy my man, the Club Officials didnot want to go to MP, but were told it is that or nothing.
Lots of other areas were proposed but turned down for one reason or another. I can remember that Elmbridge Court was a real hot favourite, but the excuse given was it would annoy the residents !
It was pointed out we would be on a flood plain, which is something the planners grasped when they approved plans for the surrounding industrial estate...

As I remember it the then great and the good wanted to site the club on the Oxleaze. Not only was this on the flood plain where we'd have been flooded almost annually, but the officials also responded to concerns the club would have no room to expand that they had no interest in the club being promoted or in ever pursuing League status.

Meadow Park might not be perfect, and our long-term future probably lies elsewhere, but without the Council we could've ended up somewhere even worse.

I only remember what a huge disappointment it was when the Elmbridge Court idea was turned down. Looking at things as they stand today, what could be worse.

I didn't realise things were so bad at MP. Those photos are shocking, as are the comments from the morons who follow the rugby club. I really can't see how you're going to be ready for the start of the season.

This probably sounds a bit trite, but good luck in your efforts, when the water finallly subsides. I've said it before , but MP is one of my favourite grounds to visit so I hope you get back on your feet as soon as.

In the meantime you will have to find somewhere else for a few matches I expect. If your nearest neighbours can't help maybe Lodge Rd could be a possibility? It's only 35minutes away and I'm sure a few extra games on the pitch won't do it any harm!

I understand that you could see a further eighteen inches or so of the goal posts mid-afternoon today.

I didn't think it would have dropped at all as it has been raining again today, at least there some improvement. dying to get back to MP its been such a long break, to only see a couple of games and then this happening, GUTTED.
I've only been following City for just over a year so i can't even begin to understand how you diehard lifelong fans must feel.

Lets me tell you a story, and one which we all need to keep in mind. Over the last few seasons Gloucester City have had more than its share of bad news and bad luck. From the financial problems to the floods, we have had to stand up and face challenge after challenge. Many a club would have given up by now

But we are not any old club. We are Gloucester City AFC

Here is the interesting thing. No matter what has been thrown at us, like a Tiger trapped in the corner, we come out fighting. More than that, we come out of the problem stronger and more determined as a result. It might take a while to happen - but even the darkest clouds have silver inside them. Take the last time we went to Frome. It was the first friendly after the financial problems which lead to so many of our players leaving. I have always believed that that game was the start of our climb back up - its ironic that the same has happened again. It all looked pretty gloomy then for sure. But we dont give up and look at us today (accepting the rain!) We have the best group of players we have had for many a year managed by the best manager you could hope fro in everty sense. We have one of the strongest Supporters Trusts in the country. Within the club we have a spirit of community and friendship which is second to none and we have a youth set up which is really going places, a full time commercial maanger who came to us from the MCC.......

I know, i know the ole Tiger has been pushed back into the corner again. But if we keep working and keep believing and keep to the values that make Gloucester City such a special club then we will come out of these problems an even stronger club than before. If you aim high in life then good things will happen. Perhpas not the things you thought would happen and perhaps not quickly either but they will happen.

Very true and our fans fighting spirit is second too none, BUT this just feels like we are building sandcastles and when we have almost finished someone comes along and knocks it down. We have to move ground

Thank you for those positive thoughts Dave.

As I taught my grandchildren, sometimes you THINK you have unsurmoutable problem, but by breaking it down into components and by tackling it STEP BY STEP, you'll find it less daunting than you first thought.

Without a doubt Meadow Park is a HUGE problem, but I'm convinced it will be overcome say he getting his soapbox. :D:

The level had definitely dropped a foot this morning - I haven't ventured onto the roof today, due to the weather ... it doesn't look like I'll get up there today (unless it gets somewhat drier)...

the road through Hempsted is now open again, which is a good sign, but the rain today is stacking up at our roundabout...

Tredworth Road bridge has just been closed again, we tried to go through that way on the way to Stroud and the water was gushing into the "dip" under the railway. Looks like it could be full up again, so I assume it's the same story for Chequers Bridge too...

This news?

Tim Harris, manager of British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division club Gloucester City, believes that the Tigers` long-term future lies away from Meadow Park.

City`s Hempsted home is submerged under eight feet of water - the third time in seventeen years that the ground has flooded.

"Where we go in the short-term is important, but long term it has to be sorted out, as it can't continue the way it is at the moment," said Harris (pictured).

"The club is not insured because of what has happened here previously.

"It is unlikely we can continue playing at Meadow Park long-term, as this will happen again and again.

"We have to stay positive but I am wondering when we can play at Meadow Park again.

"We have to take it on the chin and try to keep the positive mentality we have had at the club over the past eighteen months."

Harris has been buoyed by the response from other clubs to City's plight, while their loyal fans have spread the word nationally via newspapers, websites, radio and television.

Their friendly on Friday against Bath City has been switched to the Romans' Twerton Park home, with Bath giving the Tigers the gate receipts.

The same could happen with City's game against Forest Green Rovers on August 4th, with a donation also going to the club.

Two of Harris' former clubs, Cinderford Town and Newport County, have also made offers of help.

Slimbridge, who recently resigned from the Southern League, were approached to host the Bath friendly before the offer was made to switch the game.

"Paul Williams, a director at Bath, and their manager John Relish offered to play the game down there and give us the gate money," said Harris.

"Forest Green may switch their game, and Ashley Saunders at Cinderford and John Mack at Slimbridge have also offered help.

"My old club Newport have offered to help, and some of their fans are coming to Bath on Friday.

"The players have been great as well - they have been asking if they can help clean the ground - but unfortunately we are nowhere near that stage."

Forest Green's former City chairman Colin Gardner said: "The game on August 4th could be moved to Forest Green, and we would make a donation to City.

"I will help them with any fundraising, but the answer for them is to get out of Meadow Park as this will keep happening."

Cinderford chairman Saunders said that City could use their Causeway ground.

"We will help them out if we can," he said. "We have done a lot of work at our ground and the pitch is looking good.

"They can use the ground, even if it for pre-season or the first few weeks of the season."

Slimbridge chief Mack said: "I will liaise with Tim and see what we can do."

Can't see how you can stay really,

I've received a postcard from the Houses of Parliament acknowledging my email to Parmjit Dhanda, no response just an acknowledgement. I know he has been on the ground with the Prime Minister this week, so is probbly a bit busy at the moment.

Had a reply from the council

"I have received yours and many other e-mails regarding the concerns at Gloucester FC. The football ground is not owned or maintained by the City Council. The land which is accessed from Hempsted lane would be the responsibility of who ever owns it. If the flooding has been from the overflow of the river then the Environmental Agency should be notified or if the road flooding then Gloucestershire Highways on 08000514514.

If you wish to contact me my number is 01452 396396.

Loraine Beasley"

Who are the "powers that be" in Gloucester?

I've had sweet fa from the F.A, nada from the southern league and got an automated response from the environment agency on Tuesday but nothing else.

I said on Wednesday that I wasnt holding my breath for a good response from the rugby club as they have been so quiet recently, however I did expect at least a response! Had nothing from the following people who were contacted;

Paul Rudland - Community Development Officer
Sean Roberts - Operations Manager
Gareth Balmer - Head Groundsman
and the normal Gloucester rugby email address

Havent given up hope though. Makes you appreciate all those non league clubs with financial problems of their own but have helped us anyway that bit more.

BGB league officials have been in touch with Gloucester officials, and rest assured that they are very sympathetic and supportive.

As a long term solution (I sort of mentioned something similar earlier in the week) could we not take over Tuffley Rovers ground and develop it provided there was room as I haven't been there for a few years now. I just can't see where we will get the money from to build another purpose built ground especially when you see how much FGR paid for the New Lawn.

Do not take too much from the council employees response, she is the wrong person to speak to both in terms of position and desire to help. I would go straight to the top, Julian Wain, Chief Executive. Also there are two councillors that support the club, Mike Lawlor and Bob Gardner. Maybe others.
