Pretty much non event really, not a clue who half the players were today. Absolutely ridiculous decision for the first goal, which dropped the heads. Both keepers were shit, defence looked awful, and no pace or ideas up front. Ohara kept comin inside leaving space for their winging and giving us less options. Guess this is what preseason is for!

umm we are two divisions lower though mal and you were expected to win, and it was a competetive game, today was just a formality. Nice to see our players coming over and thanking the fans despite losing, that's one of the nice things about our level of football.

Yes, nice to put a face to a name, even if that face was 9 O'Clock watershed material!
I guess Boris learned quite a lot today, and although its not nice to give any quarter to the poshters I really aint bothered that their first team beat our mixture of first/reserves/traillists and youth. And after all, we are still the reigning braggers having won the last competitive match between the two sides.

The first goal was a million miles offside, but nowt wrong with the others. To be honest it was a deserved 5-0 win and I thought we were very professional in our application. The last goal was the work of some brilliant football.
I don't care how meaningless the game was, just like last season's game was completely meaningless, its always nice to tank your rivals and I did enjoy it today.

Not exactly true Simon, its was a competitive match, however poorly regarded the competition was it was still a cup. Agree that today's was meaningless in terms of result (although of course was useful to both sides management teams)

By your logic, that would mean that the reserve league is a competitive league, when we all know that it isn't. Yes it was nice to win it a couple of years ago, but its not like we take any notice of it. The GFA Cup is a competition contested by our reserves and as such is meaningless to the Cheltenham Town first team.

:cool:I'm not bothered about the other two results, I doubt you are too but what else do you expect when you put a full first team of professional footballers out against a mix'n'match of semi-pro's at home. I'd have been disappointed that my team only scored five to be honest and would wonder where the goals are going to come from if that was all you could muster against a reserve park team.

You've hit the nail on the head Neil, the worry is the forward line, hence why Yates is trying to get a Championship player in on loan. I heard who it was today, and I'm liking theidea of who it was. He could be just what we need.
I was impressed with both kids teams, but the Cheltenham lads especially. I think its brilliant that Gloucestershire appears to be producing some very good footballers. The ball control from all the players was very good.
I didn't see the Women's game, so can't comment.

I came to have a look. Would have been interesting if that chance on 5 mins had gone in, especially when Simmo had laid it on a plate. Gah!
First goal roundly booed but the reality was the ball actually deflected back in off a Glos defender and left two Chelt players in the clear. Took a lot of effort to get the ball into the net but in it went.
Second and third goals were deffo avoidable but were conceded. End of game in some ways.
Should be no arguments - yr 7 and 11 just could not keep the ball and Webb was hugely out-manoeuvred in midfield. Liked the keeps - Lewis? Solid display, no chance with the goals.
Very impressed with the accuracy and the pace on the passing from the Chelt players. Zipping it in, the forward controlling it, made it v difficult to get a tackle in. The little Chelt left back, the 3, picked his passes very well - timing, angle, pace all spot on.
IMHO, the Glos balls forward were not as accurate and it made life very difficult for Simmo, wel as he played. By the time he did have the ball, Chelt had al the out passes covered.

Simon, if the match is part of a league or a cup then it is part of a competition and by its very definiton is therefore competitive. However disregarded the comptetition is, it remains the last competitive match we've played against us, which means we are still the competitive kings of Gloucestershire.
I heard a whisper from one of the City players after the match that we eased up on you to give you a false sense of security for the coming season. They want you down in the Conference, to rekindle our derbies when we get promoted.

It was offside. If a defender deflects the ball that doesn't stop it being offside, although many people mistakenly think it does. See FIFA's Laws of the Game (PDF) (http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/generic/81/42/36/lawsofthegame_2010_11_e.pdf) - diagram 12 on page 109.

**“What I am worrying about here is us trying to play too much football **
For me the only time in the game that we looked any good was when we got the ball down and played! All this long ball over the top stuff is shit! Big defenders get symo in their pocket and it just keeps coming back! Like today! We have a lovely wide pitch and our wide players keep comin inside! What Cheltenham did well was switch play from side to side! We have it on the left and look only down the left etc! Alot can be learnt by some of their play! However, by all accounts that starting line up is their strongest team, so to only be 2 up at half time to a team with more trialists than 1st teamers from bsn would be worrying to me if I were a chelt fan!
tigermatty
18th July 2010, 09:50
unfortunately there were no trialists in the first half, only the second half, and I think it showed more. It is frustrating to see city side getting outplayed but we have to remember as much as the pro chelt players are good with the ball, they are also good without the ball and stopped us playing. I thought Davies looked very comfortable on the ball when he came on, and Barnes was again composed In defence against league two opposition. Next weeks games will be a fairer reflection of where we are I think. Does anyone know which bits of the ground we are having next year? The terraced end looked ideal to me

the team we played in the first half was not are strongest jj melligan and new signing martin riley played in the second half and by the end of the game we finished with two first team players artus and scott brown. It was only a friendly but it could have been 7 or 8 we had a goal disallowed hit post twice dint shoot when we should have but a good work out.and yes i will admit when you spanked are youth team and are goalkeeping coach in goal it proved that that crop of players will not make it as football league players and probaly why mark yates let most of them go.But for the guy who said we will go down needs to wake up i know we are rivals yes but you have got to give credit when its due.i would be pleased if you lot did well next season and one day have the rivalry as football league clubs god cant believe i said that:rolleyes:see you at the at cinderford tuesday i mite pop along to watch.

I spoke to their chief safety officer (or rather he spoke to me after I got a bit wound up over their fist goal). I asked him, and he at the moment we only had the stand at the side of the pitch - the one opposite where we were yesterday, as this needed the fewest stewards. There may be a chance we also get some of the area behind the goal where Chelt were yesterday but that is still being discussed. No chance of the standing terrace behind the other goal unfortunately as that takes to many stewards.

Here's an idea, the club wants some help so why not get a job lot from these people (http://www.highvizshop.co.uk/) and steward yourselves.

18th July 2010, 11:39
There is no doubt the 1st goal was offside - if not by the original shot from outside the area then from one of the multiple players passing it around between themselves in front of the goal. Bit of a joke but would rather it happen in a PSF than in any other game!
Have to say yesterday wasn't very good - can't really think of one player who had a decent game. We need Kev fit as both goalies looked extremely shakey.

if a attacking player is behind the last line of defence, the player is offside immediatly the ball is played ( assuming he is not interferring with play)no matter who it hits on the way thro, if a defender has the ball and attemps to pass back to the keeper and is intercepted on the way thro, the player is played on side, i know it is now history but that made at least three c.t players offside

I thought the game served a purpose for both sides. We had a tough game against a League 2 side who were better than us and got the chance to pass the ball around and score a few goals. It was obvious we are lacking up front as well although we all knew that before the game anyway and I am very worried about where the goals are going to come from. Cheltenham showed us how to play the pitch by getting the ball out wide and that is something we didnt do but I hope we do once the season gets underway. As Clifty said we played better when we got the ball on the floor and at time passed the ball around quite well which against a BSN side should work well.

I know we were playing a team 2 divisions higher than us but I was surprised how easily our heads went down after the first goal. There was very little talking on the pitch. Is Webbie vocal enough to be Captain? I don't like the idea of playing Simmo up front on his own. What little ball he did win was wasted through lack of support. Perhaps we could loan one of their strikers that they have in abundance, and have no trouble finding the net.
