City's list of shame

08/09 - 1st Round Qual: Chalfont St Peters 5-3 A
07/08 - 2nd round Qual: Shortwood United 2-0 H
05/06 - 1st round Qual: Christchurch 3-0 A (after replay)
04/05 - 1st round Qual: Street 3-2 A
01/02 - 1st round Qual: Cirencester Town 2-1 A
96/97 - 2nd round Qual: Thatcham Town 3-1 H
95/96 - 2nd round Qual: Cinderford Town 1-0 H

Shocking record- we've got to the 4th qualfiying round 3 times and lost all 3 in the last 10 years, 2 of which were higher opposition at the time. Last time we got to the 1st round proper was 1989, 19 years ago.

Terrible record really. Gutted.

That is truly pathetic. How can we thrash (and I MEAN thrash) a pretty good Bashley side then concede 5 to Chalfont St sh***ing Peter?! Sorry, but it does my bloody head in every year. The players really need to look hard at themselves and be suitably ashamed. I just feel sorry for the City fans who made the trek and I for one am bloody glad I couldn't go.

So, budget cuts, a fall in attendances and the usual wobblers 'round the corner then...

Bloody hell. Saved me a tenner then. 3 goals away to these should have been more than enough - instead we let in FIVE.

I don't know what to say - promotion may be more important but the cash [£3,000 for a win today] and kudos for getting [even scraping] through each round is SO important.

The good start to the season takes a big dent.

bob i never went today, had work and being a liverpool supporter decided to go into town and watch that game instead. Thank god i did! All i can say is Chalfont 2- harrow hill (of North Glos league i believe) 1, Chalfont 5 City 3. I am actually completely and utterly embarrased to be a city fan right now. I spoke to Neil and he said that Chalfont looked good but even so this is crap! The fans are trying their best to keep this club going and now the players have completely embarressed and let the club down!

Ah sorry mate I presumed you were there. Bet you were glad you didnt go though, I was in town for a bit today as well and was a bit annoyed to see how many scouse and manc shirts were wandering about the centre. I must have counted at least 30 within 10 minutes and I didnt go into any of the pubs-so you can imagine the amount.

It annoyed me cause I thought why are that lot following teams 100's of miles away with probably no connection when we have a team representing the city?? After todays result, that probably answered my question. :frown:

We were terrible. Never mind the fact the grassy pitch (that we didn't - weren't allowed to? - train on before the game) made it difficult to control the ball, never mind the officials were terrible, never mind the Chalfont players were timewasting after 20 minutes, never mind that we had a chance cleared off the line with minutes left . . . we weren't good enough.

We started with the wrong team which, I think, sent out the wrong message to our players. We had a young lad (Upshott?) playing at left back and he was way out of his depth. He was put out of his misery late in the first half when he was substituted by Syko. But by then it was too late.

Lee Smith was up against a very quick defender and was unable to beat him all afternoon (we didn't have a Plan B); Lee Marshall struggled until he, too, was put out of his misery; Mike Symonds didn't look interested; Jack looked uncharacteristically slow.

Their first goal came from a break down the right that was crossed and met by an unmarked striker.

Their second came 30 seconds after we had a shot saved, and a few minutes after a penalty appeal was turned down and after Luke Ballinger missed a one-on-one. The ball was cleared to their left winger, who beat three of our players and curled a shot past Kevin Sawyer.

Their third, I think, came from another cross and unmarked header. Their fourth came from a through ball and a one-on-one.

We scored our first when Jack smashed in the rebound after the keeper fumbled a shot. The keeper then collapsed in a heap, wasting time until the pyshio saved his life a squirt of water down the back of his neck.

Our second came after Matt Sysum - the only City played to emerge with his reputation intact - beat their left back and won a corner. He then legged it into the middle and headed the corner into the net. The keeper then wasted time by trying to start a fight.

Our third came from a "well-won" penalty when Lee Smith "fell" over a clumsy tackle while trying to head the ball. Syko buried the penalty. The keeper wasted time by taking hte ball out of the net and kicking it behind the goalline.

Then, despite our best efforts, we were unable to equalise and they scored again from a cross - their scorer again unmarked.

It was a dire, dire performance. There was no passion or desire in our play and we didn't deserve to win. We were outplayed by a team high on confidence and playing to their strengths and we were out-thought by a team that was more canny than us.

This is a really serious result for the club. I can't imagine we'll be able to afford the squad we have now. The way we played today, I'm not sure I'll be too sad to see some of them go.

Other results;

Nantwich Town FC 0 - 0 FC United Of Manchester
Meir KA FC 1 - 1 Halesowen Town FC
Leamington FC 0 - 3 Evesham United FC
Nuneaton Town FC 3 - 1 Tipton Town FC
Boston United FC 6 - 1 Glapwell FC
Cambridge City FC 2 - 0 Lowestoft Town FC
Metropolitan Police FC 0 - 3 Corby Town FC
Hitchin Town FC 5 - 0 Concord Rangers FC
Wealdstone FC 2 - 2 Bedford Town FC
Bracknell Town FC 2 - 0 Oxford City FC
Chippenham Town FC 2 - 0 Banbury United FC
Bridgwater Town FC 1 - 3 Mangotsfield United FC
Clevedon Town FC 4 - 1 Bridport FC
Wimborne Town FC 0 - 1 Tiverton Town FC
Poole Town FC 3 - 0 Merthyr Tydfil FC

So Merthyr, Oxford and Banbury the only others out of our league lost today. Banbury lost at Chippenham so no disgrace there. Poole are 2 leagues below (but top of that league) and Bracknell are in the south west divison in mid-table.

I've never posted a message before and was actually watching Slimbridge( lost 2-1) today so not at the game, but I was surprised after 2 good performances at Yate and against Bashley. Farnborough were too good! However, until Rose is replaced, results like this are always just around the corner. Imagine that last season he was sometimes selected ahead of Tom Webb!!

The performance was absolutely shambolic, it was an embarassment to be a City fan there. We didn't just to 2 lucky goals like Shortwood last year, we got absolutely dicked. I'm not going to single out any one player because all of them were WAY below their expected level today, they were AWFUL.

I can't believe we can lose to teams like this when most other teams just swipe them away with ease, why can't we do that? Why do we make it hard for ourselves every single time? I just can't believe we lost in such a convincing manner. What made it a whole lot worse is that their players, especially their goalkeeper, were idiots. Time wasting at every opportunity, riling up the City players and feigning injury. The keeper seriously deserved an OSCAR for his performance, he conned the ref over everything. I was hoping for it to get to a replay just so we could rip into him. People who act like that shouldn't deserve to win.

The officials were appaling, truly some of the worst I've seen. In the first half the linesman was flagging at seemingly everything that moved. The referee missed 2 handballs in the area, gave goal kicks for corners and vice versa, it was a shambles and it seemed like everyone was out to get us. No excuse for the players though, truly dreadful.

They seemed to be really hurting at the Final whistle, and so they should. This performance was worse than Shortwood by a mile. This competition is a goldmine for money, big crowds and publicity and once again we throw it all away to a tinpot club with no fans. Awful, awful day.

When is it going to be OUR day for once?

It seems like someone up there really truly hates Gloucester City.

You mention Shortwood! They played Didcot from the league above them today. They won 3-2!! Talking of costs, they have a number of Hartpury lads there too. Why don't we use them?

Neil
13th September 2008, 09:01 PM
Well, it's really hard to put into words the disappointment I am feeling at this result tonight.

I think we let ourselves down from the outset by failing to attempt to play football against a "lesser" team. Boris has laid the blame at the door of his two forwards and neither of them shone. Jack is struggling to recapture last years form and Simmo looks sluggish as hell. I've no idea what he's done over the last two weeks to change from the great player he was looking to what he was today but he needs to shape up or ship out PDQ.

Rosey gets a lot of stick and it's often unfair because he does a very good job of breaking up the game but today he was a passenger. What summed up his display was in the second half, Smudger out wide calling for a pass and Rosey, unmarked hit it way too hard and well in front of him out for a throw. It was simple.

Dave Phillips hit upon a good point about some teams belying the level they play at because they don't take the game seriously and would rather play with their mates or aren't prepared to put in the training. I think Chalfont had a number of those and there were probably four players in their side that were better than what we had in ours despite us being two leagues higher.

They deserved to win mind. I thought the first was just one of those things. The second was a good goal from their 9, who looked superb and it came on the break.

The third at the start of the second half came when we had them under the cosh and they hit us on the break again. The fourth didn't seem to matter and their 7 angled in a perfect cross that was nodded inside the far post.

Then, just as last week we decided to play. Jack scored and the keeper took a whack on the head for his trouble. Matty Sysum, who must start next week (in place of Rosey?) got his head to the second although I think they were claiming that he headed it out of the keepers hands. Syko's penalty made it look like we had a chance and we threw everything and the kitchen sink at it but they got one instead of us.

Game over.

I'm finding it hard to use words like "disgrace" or saying that the players should be ashamed because they don't really apply.

I think some of them need to take a long hard look at themselves and ask what they're playing it. We were our own worst enemy this afternoon.

We all want to enjoy a cup run and I fear we'll never have one until we are at the next step with a better quality of footballer in our side because these players aren't good enough. It's not their fault, it's not ours. You get what you pay for.

I'm absolutely gutted.

Neils says "more disappointment" and in the background, you hear I presume Boris saying we have only lost two. That is indeed correct we have only lost two, but of he teams we have played there have only been 2 who you might consider challengers for the title (Farnborough & Bashley). So I think it is two early to think we are doing well in the league, lets see how we get on against Chipps, Halesowen, Cambridge City, Brackley & Hemel.

What is our problem in the FA Cup, at a time when we need the extra finances of prize money, we lose to a team in a much lower league and by all accounts weren't interested today. Maybe that's where Boris needs to start get rid of those who aren't interested, at least if Jody Bevan had been there he would have given 110% to the team even if he didn't score.

Did Boris not like your "more disappointment" comment Neil ?

Neil
14th September 2008, 11:28 AM
He misinterpreted it I guess. I've always separated the FA Cup away from the league and this result comes on the back of the Shortwood defeat and not the Farnborough one.

Bob has done a good job of listing our FA Cup heartache over the years and it's shocking that we've added to it.

Back this time last year I realised that we're never going to amount to anything while we have players from the same pool as our opponents and until we start paying for the likes of Mark McKeever or a younger Alex Sykes then we never will.

Pablo
14th September 2008, 12:20 PM
I had the same thinking as Neil with the result coming on the back of the Shortwood defeat and not the Farnborough one. Really disappointed with yesterday, we shouldn't be getting beat by teams like Chalfont St. Peter.

It must be a City thing, over that list of clubs that have beaten us we've had different players, managers, even home grounds. So it must be just a Gloucester City thing.

I came out of my house yesterday with real optimism and excitement with the FA Cup this year. Another 'good draw' we have been given to have a chance of getting through and making some money for the club. The FA Cup is paramount to any non-league club as far as money goes, the FA Trophy is good too but the amount of money is quite different, and we needed the prize money of even a few qualifying rounds to make up for the smaller attendances that we will get at Cirencester.

I thought Boris was right about the strikers, but we did also concede 5 goals against a team two leagues below us, and I kid you not, it could have been 10 if it wasn't for Kev making a couple of saves and some bad misses when they should have scored. The second goal I seem to remember their player walking through about 3 of our defenders before curling it in the corner!

But for the record I'm still delighted at the league form, it's just how much the FA Cup means to non-league clubs.

Neil

Does anyone know what the official crowd was?

Neil
14th September 2008, 12:27 PM
Their 2nd, 3rd and 5th were goals on the break which tells you how easy it is to pull us apart when we've committed players forward.

Maybe the strikers did not have a good game but I think they are good players. Don't get me wrong, Jodie is my number 1 but he is now a bench player at this level. Great to see him scoring though!

Neil
14th September 2008, 01:31 PM
I can't agree with what people are saying about Jody Bevan. OK, I admit he's a great bloke and he gives 100% and loves the club but that doesn't get success on the football pitch.

When he was playing regulalry at the same time as Jason Welsh it was plain to see that Welshy's timing in the air was was much, much better than Jody's who'd jump and would often lose out to the defender. OK, aerial prowess may not have been his forte but his physique is always going to see him as a "big striker" in a team like ours.

Our front two, or preferably Will Morford and Jack Pitcher back together are as good as you'll get at this level. The problem seems to be the service and in the first half yesterday there was very little from midfield other than lobby balls over the full backs for Upcott and Smith to chase and hopefully cross into the mix.

When that header from their number 9 bounced inside the corner to make it 4-0 it was probably the most embarassed i've ever been at a City match. Shortwood last year was bad but this was a complete joke how we got pulled apart on numerous occasions, as Neil points out three of their goals came from quick breaks which we couldn't deal with. Take nothing away from Chalfont they looked a good side but City should have been able to overcome them. By the time we started playing it was too late even though it got tense at the end with one goal in it until they broke away again.

Its not just the manner in which we lost in not playing until 20 minutes to go but also that its hard enough to get people to Cirencester at the moment. This sort of result doesn't help and I feel we've lost our main chance to catch people's imagination and get them along.

This is a shocking result and I can not believe that we have been knocked out by lower league opposition again!

Time and time again we are asked to support the club, get extra people through the turnstiles and help raising money for the club. I will always try and do my bit and continue donating through the 500 club but we can't keep throwing the opportunity of money through the FA cup away. Its not just the prize money but the extra publicity and then hopefully increased league attendances that we are throwing away.

I am sure this will now see us have to release some of our squad and I just hope we don't start falling down the table and lose even more support.
