We looked really nervous in the first half and didn't play well. Terrible first goal - our defence just parted. Second half was much better and we were a bit unlucky not to get a draw, Their defence was solid and well organised - although the ref bottled the decision to send off their centre back.

Tom Hamblin man of the match in my opinion.

Really good game, we were unlucky not to draw but Farnborough were the better team overall. We played some good Football but I thought we reverted back to our old ways of hoofing the ball for some of the match which wasn't pretty to see!
The Farnborough No.4 was ridiculously lucky not to have been sent off for a punch Joe Calzaghe would've been proud of, couldn't believe he stayed on.
Fantastic support today as well, especially in the bar after the game!

Bitterly disappointed to lose, but then we should be used to it because we've only ever not lost once at Cherrywood Road.

They looked like a good side and after going at them early doors they had a couple of good chances but took the lead with a simple punt upfield from the keeper, controlled by their 11 and slotted past Kev.

Second half Rosey put through his own goal from a corner and it looked all over but Smudger "won" a penalty, he kicked the ball one way and seemed to run into the defender. Syko's spot kick was saved but was retaken because the keeper was waaaay off his line. He didn't miss again.

What happened then was a couple of City players tried to get the ball back to restart but their 4 kept hold of the ball and wouldn't let it go, when Syko wrestled it off of him 4 punched him in the face. He only got booked for it!

We should've had another pen later on when Smudger's corner was flicked on at the near post and stopped from going in by the man on the post who crouched down and blocked it with his arm at his side.

Jack Pitcher got a good look at the rotating advertising boards when the defender nudged him into them at full pelt.

But all in all, it's hard not to say that the best team didn't win.

Listen to how Boris saw it here (http://www.cityladies.co.uk/spf/dm060908.mp3) (right click, save as).

Good second half fight back, but we were lucky to still be in it at half time. Lost count the number of times they got round us and their big centre forward scuffed some great chances.
Good set up at Cherrywood Road, understand they are having a Football Foundation financed stand down the near end. One day when we have our own ground we should aim for that.
First time I've ever been away with the Tigers and enjoyed the whole day apart from the result! It really felt like a "big game" today...

To be fair although we played a lot better in the 2nd half, we didnt really deserve a win. We were pretty woeful in the 1st half and gave Farnboro far too much respect, they played it down the wings quickly and on the floor, whilst we reverted to whacking it away and panicking. We were fortunate that we werent 3 nil down at half time.

However 2nd half brought a far better approach, the game was still quite open but we looked far more up for it and closed them down whilst they were in posseson, something we didnt do in the 1st half. The incident with their number 4 ultimately could, and should, have changed the game. Only the ref can answer why on earth he didnt send him off. I think even the home fans were pretty shocked by that decision. We came close on a couple of occasions near the end, enjoying some good possesion but they broke away right at the death and almost sneaked another goal.

They must have a fair bit of money being pumped in down there (£9 admission helps ) due to the overall set up and the electronic advertising hoardings.

However for a team at the top of the league with a decent following playing the only other unbeaten side in the league they werent half quiet. I'd be more than a little embarrassed if citys vocal support was like theres. I.E, ten pubescent 13 year olds with voices that havent broken yet! Was quite amusing to see them all taken the back way out of their own ground though

We had a good support down there, at a guess I'd say 80 city fans there, a good crack in the bar after the game as well considering we lost. Shame it didnt really seem to wake the locals out of their slumber though!

A bit unfair mate. When they were on top in the first half it was pretty quiet at our end, and they created a fair old racket when they were all under cover down the side when it rained. Heard the noise and got some fair old banter when I walked round!
Disappointed it really took our goal to get us going after the initial cheering wore off.

Not Much activity....just swept another bang average "premier" team to the side with relative ease. Hardly gripping stuff.

Fair play to the city lot, it was fantastic to finally see some away fans and you attempted to make some good noise too...if only more fans were like yourselves.

Thought we thoroughly deserved the points- your keeper made some great saves.

Referee, well, Wooz certainly deserved a red for his Khan antics. Thought overall he was poor for both sides. Very inconsistant.

Definitely the most positive side we have seen this season and think you guys will do well. good luck with the ground and for the season.

Some slight contradiction in your post as well because in the first line we are bang average yet by the time we get to the end of the post we are the most positive side you have come up against.

Yes, you have beaten the side that will probably be your biggest threat this season  but leave out the sarcastic comments and you will find that you will be more than welcome to join in the banter on here.

We were disappointingly average today, and no doubts that the better side won and could have been more than 1 up going in to the break. We just didn't seem to have the confidence, and when some of our approaches were snuffed out seemed to struggle to produce a Plan B. Farnborough were comfortable, especially at the back.

Ironically, it took their second goal for us to spark in to life and there was a 15 minute period where we could easily have got an equaliser, especially if Amir Woozley had been sent off. Would have felt it a lucky point if we had, but there are enough times in the season when you don't get what you deserve so you'll take it.

Good away support today. How many teams carry on the singing in the clubhouse afterwards when their side has been beaten. Thanks to Penalty, Clifty, and Egg for the lesson in Poker, I had a nice little profit by the time we reached Gloucester.

Tom Hamblin for a nothing challenge in the far corner in the first half? I know they had three or four.

ItmustbeCity
7th September 2008, 12:24 PM
Honestly thought for the first 45 minutes we would be on the wrong end of a hiding but City really went for it towards the end and could have nicked a point. Can only echo what everyone has said about their number 4 staying on the pitch, only the ref knows how . Overall can't complain about the result, Farnborough will be up there come April and hopefully we can join them.

Should also mention the fantastic support, can't think of many other sides who would carry on singing in the bar after a defeat but it was excellent to hear. Lets carry it on for next week and get a cup run going

Clifty
7th September 2008, 01:04 PM
i have to say that i am not all too dissapointed with the result yesterday. We didn't quite challenge enough in the first half, but were much better in the secod! it just felt like they had the luck of the bounce yesterday as everything seemed to fall to them.

There is something that we all have to consider though. Gloucester City are a team with no ground, and limited resources. Farnborough charged £9 entry, £2.50 for program, they had a plasma tv in their tea bar outside, they had automatic advertising hoardings, and have a huge clubhouse, so when you consider what we have compared to them, then you have to be pleased with how close we came to getting a point at the end!

Neil
7th September 2008, 01:10 PM
We talked about this kind of thing. They're used to spending above and beyond what we spend on a weekly basis, remember, they were in the Conference. Even if it did get them into trouble and see them reform.

It makes one wonder if they're plan is to spend, spend, spend for a few seasons, get as high as they can, get into untold debt, then pop and start again as "Farnboro' FC".

And what you say about the spending on certain things is odd when you consider the luxuries of the teabar versus the sh!t filthy state of the toilets next door. And also whereas most clubs put on hot food for the players after the game Farnborough just left a plate of sandwiches in the changing room for our lot. How cheap is that?!!

A week ago people said that Yate weren't too much of a team and so, by implication, we did not have to be soooo good to beat them. But we were excellent !

Now we have plenty of acknowledgement of how good Farnborough are, grovel, grovel. I met lots of their fans, not borolad obviously, who would have been unsurprised if we had grabbed a point in the last fifteen minutes.

Between these two games, we played and beat Bashley who many had fancied pre-season.

Glad that none of you lose sight of how well we are doing.

Before the kick was taken, the linesman told the keeper twice to stay on his line, which he did not heed.

Not the best performances I have seen, first half we looked like we did last season. Was more impressed second half with alot more effort, but we still make simple mistakes all over the pitch. Thought Jack was tired, not suprising as he worked his socks off generally chasing lost causes.... Pity he didnt score when he was one on one with the 17 year old keeper whos dad said "his son was gay" WTF????:tosser: Would have like to have seen Reeeeeedy come on in his natural position, but best of luck to Sammy when he goes back to Uni......

I was impressed with the ground overall, I dont often have food at a ground, but it was OK although they need to get the service sorted, and the women in the canteen were out of order! literally. One of their fans said "you bin stiched up there mate" when his meal turned up 20 minutes before mine! and he order way after me.Like the club, managed a few games of darts although Egg is getting far too good.:boxer:

Oh and I bet Khan wished he could have punched :boxer: like their number 4 he should have been sent off...

Well done to Joe/Neil for sorting the coach was well organised.

A Farnborough fan explained it to me at half time. Their new (wealthy) chairman is putting his money into the ground and facilities to try and make them self-sufficient - not the players. Westley did it the other way around and that's why they went bust.
They are basing their playing budget on average crowds of 700 over the season. It's reviewed half way through the season and adjusted up or down.
They are very aware they nearly lost their club so have also set up a Supporters Trust with a seat on the board to keep an eye on things... we could learn from these sort of thing when we finally settle at our new ground.

I have noticed recently that when there is a story about C##lt T##n on the website there a lot of comments on there. Mostly disgruntled and a few from City giving them some stick.
Whenever there is a report on City there are rarely any comments. I think it would be good to stick some good positive comments on there to contrast with the ones from the 'dark end'. I have a bit of a problem doing this at work which in the day which is when most of the comments sem to go up. I think it would just show people the difference in the 2 sets of supporters and give that annoying 'Derek from Gloucester' something to read.

Why are they cutting back like they are? The Citizen is the first point of reference for people who are looking for local news. Because Ian Mean is an ex-greaser and thinks our local newspapers direction should be about drug addicts, sad acts, criminality and all the seedier negative side of Gloucester ... He does'nt want to print positive informative stuff because he thinks it does'nt sell newspapers ..

Post on the Farnboro forum

It was a pretty easy win in the end for us, as the first half we controlled the game and maybe should've had a few more, but we were in no real danger. I thought the first goal was a good one, as the ball to Wheels and then his control into his stride, before nestling it in the corner was top drawer.

Second half the plucky minnows started to get into the game and bit, but we were still the stronger side and the 2nd goal came. We shut up shop for the day and let them attack a bit. I reckon this was to give our defence a little workout, as these little amateur sides haven't really caused us any problems, so best to give the lads a training session on the pitch with the points secured.

From where I was it looked a penalty. However, I was up the opposite end of the pitch, so it wasn't the best view!! Whether Lyall came off his line or not, it was a great save, but I think a retake was a nice gesture, as it gave the small away support a nice momento from Fortress Cherrywood. They can tell their grandchildren that they saw their team score at our ground and who knows, they might even knock up some "I was there, when we scored at Farnborough" t-shirts.

It was a good turnout from such a small side, as they had 60ish, so credit to them for that. It'll be nice to get out of this league and up to a standard where the players aren't all 6 foot 4 and their passing talents are being able to lump a ball 60 yards.

http://www.gethampshire.co.uk/sport/s/2035039_wheelers_on_fire_as_boro_tame_the_tigersMa ybe our own game wasn’t fantastic after the break, but we were resolute. We defended really well, got numbers round the ball and we got a vital toe in there, a header in here, and we cleared the danger. And I think thats what made them a quality side, they defended superbly and always seemed to have players over at the back.

Sorry folks, that's crap and the rain over the lens doesn't help. Was generally poor quality filming and a lack of commentary which ans most of that half isn't really worth showing. My excuse is that it was a last minute request to film (so I couldn't prepare my script ala Motson) and also I had Stella elbow, having been drinking for some hours.

BTW - every team seems to have their mongs, even us I bet (sorry Dom). I'm really not picking them out in cruelty, this couple like so many of their genetically challenged UK family were giving it the big gob as I was filming, so I simply threw them a noose. Funny how they clam up, well sort of.
