A realistic list methinks, one that will do the team more good than the clubs bank balance but even though we know the days of getting Aston Villa and Everton are seemingly over have the likes of Rochdale visiting done us any real good?

I suggest that those who are wholly disappointed look forward to the first league game instead (as well as pop down to the home friendlies!)

it's all about getting players fit and trying out new combinations. I'd like to see a couple more teams from Conf / Conf South to give us some stern tests (no FGR?) ...

is there a match v the supporters?

Neil

That would be the glamour tie!

I agree with the Dr I think it would have been nice to have seen another BSS or BSP side played to give us a proper run out. I think it is a little dangerous playing to many weaker sides.

I'm told that Neath won't be an easy game. Maybe a few of you are overlooking that?

LATEST NEWS FROM THE EAGLES!

---------------------------------------------

DETAILS OF PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES:

Wednesday 16 July Home to Swansea City

Roberto Martinez brings his Championship side for their first first friendly over to the Gnoll for the first game of football to be played at the historic ground in what should prove to be a memorable occasion.

Friday 18 July Away to Truro City

Saturday 19 July Away to St Blazier

We travel to Cornwall to play two games in a mini tour as part of our pre-season preparations.

Saturday 26 July Away to Goytre Gwent

Sunday 27 July Away to West End

Tuesday 29 July Away to Garden Village

We play three good fixtures against Welsh League sides with good pitches.

Friday 1 August Home to Newport County

We welcome Dean Holdsworth and his team to the Gnoll in what should be another cracking fixture.

Tuesday 5 August Away to Afan Lido

A classic fixture against a team that will hopefuully compete for WPL promotion this season and give the South a much needed extra member.

Friday 8 August Home to Gloucester City

Our pre-season winds up with an attractive looking fixture against high flying GC.

Neath definately seem to think highly of us:smile:

Think its a good idea to play SOME weaker teams pre-season to get people scoring etc, but WSM aside there are no crowd pullers and it would be good to get a half decent pre-season crowd. Can't see Whitney Town enticing the stayaways back

Ultimately I trust the club in their decision on what level of opposition chosen, from what was available to play. Could perhaps though have pulled in a couple on the back of the flood sitaution eg good timing to have Hull City having made the Premiership and suely would emapthise with us?

It would be great to have some big clubs with star names but I think the days of Swindon (when they were in the Premier) and Chelsea coming are long gone. I remember having loads of conversations with people when we have played teams like Rochadale who think they are a waste of time as our lads have very little chance of winning and it doesn't bring a bigger crowd than playing some one like Weston.

I think this is a decent pre season and will give the lads some good run outs and hopefully some competitive matches.

you want a good mix of pre-season friendlies, quite a few against lower division teams, a few against the same standard or slightly higher standard that will be a real test. Then one or two against super opposition (League 1 or 2, Championship or Premiership) that we have no real hope of winning but might attract a good crowd of supporters to come and watch.

We will be able to get use to our new temporary ground before the season starts and hopefully hit the ground running rather than last season where we had a disastrous start to the season.

Larger clubs no longer turn up for "free". They want their costs covered so sometimes a smaller club at home will at least make some money for the club whereas there is no guarantee that a larger club will, despite what it might seem

i know that FGR wanted a fee for a friendly last season. (i assume that that ended up not being the case what with the flood thing). I mean come on....FGR for christ sake!!!

Mike can i suggest that the game against Cinderford be moved to the weekend as the roadworks at over are causing nightmares and we would need to leave at 5 to make sure we are there for kick off! My colleague left quedgeley at 5 on monday and got home to Lydney at 8:15!!!

I just thought I would unashamedly bring these to the top of the list again!

Are the roadworks still an issue for the Cinderford game?

Neil
12th July 2008, 12:14 PM
I was told that they're not so bad so I'll be setting off at 6pm. Is that advisable?

Clifty
12th July 2008, 03:08 PM
they are still quite bad but i am picking graham and trev up at 6 in the hope that that will be enough time!

I have occassionally made the mistake of going over Over roundabout and down the A40 and have had to queue 10 mins to get onto the roundabout. Approach via Westgate as traffic is usually backed up all the way to Plock Court and sometimes beyond, I think the new lights on the roundabout work against this direction.

This is 6:20ish, that's what I'm talking about.

I'd give it an extra 20 mins

Jake

Would the A48 route be just as quick?

Neil
12th July 2008, 10:18 PM
The only difference would be if you go over the Severn Bridge Jake!

pmsl I can walk to the ground quicker than you can get through the roadworks!

looks like there will be the usual poor turnout by cinderford fans. hasn't even been mentioned on their forum. I thought that this was in aid of wilko??

Neil
13th July 2008, 12:10 PM
It was mentioned last week. Someone said that they'd beat us so I added that the only way Cinderford would be fired up enough to win against us was if we fielded a team full of bears!

Kingo
13th July 2008, 01:32 PM
So who do you think will play up front for us tomorrow?

Neil
13th July 2008, 01:37 PM
Brown bear and Koala bear. A decent little and large type pairing.

Mind you, the Koala is a bit of an enigma. His pre match preparation is a bit topsy turvy because all he does is munch on bamboo but it helps his strike rate. Saying that he's a miserable sod cos after the game he just disappears.

It has been said that the Koala just eats, shoots and leaves.

I would have thought you would favour a Kodiak bear, Neil, bearing in mind your proclivities and Karsh of Ottowa skills.

An alternative is to cut up to Hartpury - across to Tibberton and come out at Huntley. H and I did this last week and its about 4 miles more along narrowish lanes but you do keep moving.

Dunno what I was thinking of Neil.- Where's there dunce's hat?
