Just got back from Pennydarren Park, where Gloucester City Supporters' 6-a-side team finished 3rd (out of 8) in the annual 6-a-side tournament.
We came second in our group, following an early 3-0 loss but then two victories. That was quite an achievement, considering the past 3 years we have competed we never actually won a game!
In the semi-finals we faced a strong Newport team, who were the pre-tournament favourites, and also the eventual winners I believe. We were placed under pressure all match by the quicker and fitter Ambers, but they failed to really trouble Adam in the City goal. We almost nicked a goal on the break twice, one just bouncing agonisingly past the post after their keeper had been caught out of position. But with 2 minutes left on the clock, they fired the ball into our crowded goalmouth from way out, where it picked up 2 or 3 deflections before just slipping past Adam and into our net.
Well done to all who participated, I think we did ourselves, Gloucester City, and England proud! I thought Tigermatty's volley that opened our scoring for the day was one of the cleverest goals I've seen up there, and Darren Baldwin was a defensive rock. A couple of great saves by Adam in the mix, as well as some strong play by Travis and Jamer meant we fielded the strongest team we've ever been able to in the competition. I think a fully fit Shandy up front may have been the difference between 1st and 3rd place, but the tournament came just too soon for him following his injury.
And thanks very much to the organisers from Merthyr who really are a great bunch. We'll be ready and raring for next year!
