Programme Monthly, the bible for collectors of football programmes, has awarded Gloucester City the runners-up position in its BGB Southern Premier Division Awards for 2007-08. We have come second (by quite a margin, to be truthful) behind Banbury United, who are winners once again. I think we were separated from them last year by Bath City, who are now in 14th place since being promoted to the Blue Square South.
The commentary about the programmes is disappointing. Only 5 clubs submitted entries and the judgement was heavily dependent upon someone at Mangotsfield sending in all of the programmes that he had collected on his travels. Even then, there was no programme from Brackley until they were e-mailed for one. In case you think there was any bias, Mangotsfield achieved fourth place and Brackley 12th=.
Congratulations to Mike Dunstan and the team. I think we should be well pleased with the outcome, though it is rather sullied by the fact that in third place - and you simply won't believe this - comes Team Bath. Cue howls of disbelief, anger and exasperation I am sure. Most programme editors put in hours of work and meet tight deadlines. Mike must be as diligent as you will find.
At least our programme beat Team Bath's. How the good folk at Chippenham, Kings Lynn, Clevedon, Hitchin and Merthyr must feel about being judged inferior to the students I do not know. In fact, is there a poorer programme than Team Bath's ?
To be perfectly honest, whilst I am pleased for us and I know many people admire the Banbury programme the inclusion of TB in third place surely makes a mockery of the competition.
