i currently live in somerset where i work for a league 1 football club as the groundsman (no guesses as to who the team is!!!!)
but my question is, why after watching football at the third tier of the english game do i find myself bored out of my mind for 90 minutes?
ok they team are on a bad run at the moment, but even the teams who come down to play them dont seem that much better!!!!!
granted the premiership is good, quality players and what not - but the standard of league 1 just makes me think and feel sorry for all the fans who pay those kind of prices to watch this stuff. lack of real skill and lack of real mistakes makes for rather poor viewing. its just boring, i have been able to catch a few city games this year down at tivvy and mangos and a hand full of 'home' games and have enjoyed it far more than watching the football from 4 leagues above - ok, mistakes are far more common at citys level, but it adds to the entertainment and heartache!!!!!! but even the t-enders make it worth while both home and away - great support and a good set-list!!!!!!
sorry if i seem a little down beat about working and getting paid for watching football - but seriously the quicker our boys get a new home the quicker il be sending my application in!!!!! lol!!!!
on another note, called around meadow park last weekend to have a nose - any reason why the have left the centre circle in tact whilst piling the rest of the pitch up?????

No idea on the MP question, although it was suggested that it was to stop people playing on it but with the football thing, you're right. I've got Aldershot and Woking on TV at the moment and yes, they have talented players but the game seems like it's at walking pace and is as boring as hell to me.
And we beat that Somerset team last time we played them in a competitive game

ha-ha, yes i have mentioned it once or twice to a few older members of this certain somerset club!!!!!
i guess cos we r fans of city we take it a little more to heart and get more involved - i dont know? but it does seem slow and boring

you want slow and boring football?! come up the new lawn at the moment. seems the hopes of making the play offs have disappeared now and the crowds are dipping - on saturday against halifax our average crowd was down by 500. it seems if you want excitement you either battle to stay up or your in and around the play offs.

excitement is certainly what you get watching city! thought i was going to drop down with me heart on saturday when we were peppering their goal and not scoring! we are playing some cracking stuff at times, and you are certainly right, i think that football in the premiership can be really boring!!!

Lost 3-1 to leamington at home on saturday. Went 1-0 up then conceded 3 sloppy goals. The pitch had turned into mud because of the rain. Second half the fog came in and you could barely see the other end of the pitch. Too round it all off the 150 + leamington fans kicked in one of stands.
The excitment of non league for ya ;)

Agreed. Entertainment is not gauged just by quality but by a whole number of things. I would suggest that you will always find your team entertaining to a degree as you are emotionally tied to their performance. But I agree that as you go up the leagues the quality of players cancels out against each other more, and the tactics also mean games are more predictable.
I very rarely watch live football on TV, I'm just not bothered. I watch highlights if I know something dramatic has happened, and the goals on Sunday.
Interestingly I've been watching The Match from 25 years ago on ITV4 (Sunday mornings) and that is much more entertaining than current flight football (and not just because of its nostalgic value).
Maybe the media has just become too saturated with footy.

Interesting to see Somerset mentioned on the COF, as I grew up in a little village some 3 miles from Street. I have many happy memories of that certain place which is home to a Div. 1 side. My mother and her family grew up in Victoria Road and her brother, Roy Hobbs actually played goalkeeper for that certain team in the thirties I believe. He was actually dragged from his sick bed one Saturday to play against their then great rivals from a certain seaside town.
Sorry to mention this, but I well remember the SL Cup 2nd leg at Longlevens, amazing after being 4 - 1 down from the 1st leg.
I still have family there, and always look to see this certain teams results and it is disappointing to see that they are presently having a bit of a lean spell, I am sure they will soon be on the up again.

I have to disagree with you Neil about the Aldershot Woking game last night. I thought it was a really enjoyable game and was quite pleased it went into extra time. I think its worth remembering that these players especially the Aldershot ones have been playing a lot of football lately. Also did you see the Torquay Aldershot game? That was played at a terrific pace and was a great advert for non-league football.
Ive seen Aldershot a few times this season and they are a great side to watch and I think they will do well in League 2 next season as there attacking pace will do well against most league defences

i have only watched two conference level games on tv and switched both of them off as they were so boring. First was Woking Vs FGR, and the second was that one the othet night!

I agree Woking V FGR was a pretty dull game. I cant believe you switched the game on Tuesday off for being dull though. Ive seen loads of BSP games this season and enjoyed most of them. Thing is you are going to get dull games and good games at any level of football.

The most interesting thing about that game was the fight between a wasp and bluebottle directly in front of the camera, on 37 minutes. I'll not tell you who came out top but it was carnage. See for yourself.

yea that was the game! it was probably less exciting than watchin paint dry. FGR just looked awful in that game and could barely string two pass's together. when they did the final ball was awful. Woking weren't much better!!

iam sure this club will stabilise themselfs in the football league as they still are new boys - however todays encounter with doncaster, who were second going into todays game, was a little better than the last few months, it still really lack any excitement!!!!!!! only neil sullivan in goal for donny making stupid guestures with his hand behind his back to the home fans behind the goal whenever they chanted 'keeper whats the score' - lol!!!!!
well at least i get to go to hardenhusish on eatser monday - cant wait - havnt seen the city since mango's away :O(
