Press Release PR 028/2008Date 28th February 2008
FLOOD AID FOR CITY FOOTBALL CLUB

Flood hit Gloucester City football club is to get a cash boost.

The club, which hasn’t been able to play at its Meadow Park ground since the devastating weather last summer, is being helped out with a £10,000 cheque from Severn Trent and Gloucester City Council.

The cash is part of a £422,000 package of community benefits being funded by Severn Trent Water. Council Leader, Paul James, commented: “These funds from Severn Trent are enabling us to undertake some positive projects to assist those communities and organisations who suffered as a result of the flooding in the summer of 2007. We are also using some of this money to increase the city’s resilience against a recurrence in the future.

“ We are pleased to be able to give assistance to the city football club whose ground has been unusable since the summer. As well as needing to resolve the issue of a long-term home for the club, they have to survive in the short-term and this award is designed to help them to do so.

“The help needed by the football club just shows the extent and variety of the hardship last summer’s events caused across the city.”

Parmjit Dhanda, Gloucester’s MP, said: “I recently received a delegation from Gloucester City Football Club including the chairman and manager and I promised them I would help raise some funds to help them back on their feet. Hence I’m delighted that Severn Trent listened to our request and I look forward to working with the club again, not just to keep them ticking over but to support them in all of their efforts to get back within the city boundaries where they belong.”

Martin Kane, customer relations director at Severn Trent Water, comments: “We have entrusted Gloucester City Council with funding so they can get cash direct to the organisations, such as Gloucester City football club, who have suffered as a consequence of the floods in summer 2007. We hope that our £10K donation will go some way to helping the football club.”

Club Chairman, David Phillips, said: “This is a very gratefully received donation for the Club and its supporters, who have been battling hard to keep the Club running in the most difficult of circumstances. Severn Trent, the City Council and our MP, Parmjit Dhanda, are also due our heartfelt thanks.

“Although our financial position is difficult, the first question I am invariably asked when meeting fans is ' Any news on a new ground yet? ' Perhaps the unified forces that have given us a vital lifeline here, can come together again to help push the new ground project into a quicker mode!”
