In my haste to post the above message I forgot to mention that I was pleasantly surprised as I'd half wondered whether the goal netting might have interfered with the autofocus, or is it a case that you have to manually focus for the goal area?

I've found it a bit of an enigma to be honest. The strong sun mean't that I could set it to shutter priority @ 1250th/sec, which in turn was setting the aperture at anything from F22 up to F11 as the sun got lower. That means that it's great for sunny days but when it's overcast or in the shadow of a stand roof behind the goal I will have to set it to F2.8 and manually focus it on the six yard line. It can autofocus and sometimes it works but the net also moves so there are mixed results.
