View Full Version : City in my soul

SHANDY LOVE MACHINE

I had a sort of vision last night, like St Paul on the road to Domestos, and these words came spilling into my dream. Whether Pam Ayres was trying to communicate to me from the other side I don't know but I have to share this with you before it goes.

When the cold wind whistles and wintering comes a wandering,
and the hard dead ground meets the razor sharp air,
will you be there?

When 14 men come a calling 'en jaune',
Huffing, puffing, scoreless but yes how they care,
will you be there?

When loyal old faces are no longer stood beside you
and just a handful of souls meets your stare
will you be there?

Of course you will, my friend, of course you will,
Even after my final breath, lying in earth's icy lair,
I will be amongst you, I will always be there

Now believe me I think poetry is normally a load of old pony, so if anyone can turn that into a terrace chant......

I am not the only City fan to enjoy poetry, so well done to you Shandy. You'll catch something spiritual in poems that is harder to deliver in prose.

I catch your drift here. It's very poignant.

I will be there, because I am your friend.

It's harder every time we play as we did last Thursday, but I will be there.

If Pam Ayres was comunicating from the other side then she must have been in bed with you!! I believe she is still amoungst us

As for the poem

SUPERB

It reminds me a little of an article that appeared in the programme a season or so back - I believe lifted from a MTFC prog - which tried to explain why we do what we do for our football club. If anyone has a copy, it might make a good read.

As for the St Paul ref - spooky - thats who we were drawn against in the Glos Cup at U18 level.

As for this face, well not New Lawn regular but thats because along with a hardy few others we are with the youth sides, matches or training. It was a 5 min sprint from The Spa to Meadow Park last year - this year its logistically v difficult to get from A to B before kick off. A few, only a few, of the hardy souls are still out in the cold and rain with you, but cheering on another side in the jaune.

Well done David, always a stalwart of the club. Just wish some of the parents of the Youth Sides would do 'their bit' as well.

Dave - by the 'other side' I meant Stroud

To put things into context, at youth level we have parents who act as secretary, set up pitches, provide food, run the line, drive players to and from matches and training, act as physio...........and may other things besides. The vast majority of this is done on a voluntary basis and they put in many more hours (and in some cases £ over and above the subs) than many at the parent club would appreciate.

We have always been a short of parent helpers at Under 18 level - it was ever thus - though if you had seen me and a group of others trying to carry the portable goals across the pitch on Thursday night, you will have seen no shortage of help then either (the goals are portable but very heavy!). Some more help in getting players food together at 18 level would, I admit, be very useful.
