I reckon it could be me, I do remember writing something to that effect after the citizen's entire back three pages were taken up with bobbin's promotion stories one year...some things never change eh?

Apart from the fact there is no city final edition anymore. When I did work ex at St John's Lane in 2004 there were still six editions, maybe seven. During the time I worked there the district editions went.

When that letter was written it was an evening paper, now it is a morning paper...

I remember writing one in after Nick Nelmes (think that was his name) - Lydney RFC player/manager for some reason slagged off the club for the 3rd week in a row in the Pink Un in his Column. They printed quite a bit of it, but edited the bit about rugby being a game played by no necked public school boys who play rugby to suppress their rather obvious homosexual tendancies..
Not sure why they left that bit out.

Ha just shows how much the local rag has changed

There's a letter from an "Andrew Cook, Barnwood" there somewhere too. Haven't found yours yet Bob although I do remember that Nick Nelmes thing.

None of it matches dangerous Guy Lammiman and his Tales from the T-End though, he caused the Chairman to offer his resignation!

The Chelt 1/4 page ad is once again in the LOCAL Glos Citizen today!

Stick mine up Neil - I have written a few to the 'sports-bag' in my youth. I feel all nostalgic. Port Pies and Snacks, the shite clipart tiger, Steve Mokler, wanting to string Keith Gardiner up by the testes from a garage a la Mussolini...

Exactly the same here. Our report from the Stevenage game in the Stroud Life is just above a whole 1/4 page advert for their game against Darlington. They must be paying a fair bit to get the advertisments in many papers across the county.

Glad to see the Bobbins are already making use of the groundshare money...

Which of the other adverts in the paper are in "association with Gloucestershire Media"? I doubt they're paying much at all.

Bob, I seem to have the letters from Nelmes but not from the City fans, which is a shame.

Don't knock it.

Next season we should be targeting an average home gate of 500+. Not sure what this seasons average is but guess at 320.

An optimistic 100+ may come from the local Gloucester community.

Another 50 from away fans as Cheltenham is closer (assuming BSN) and more accessible.

The rest should come from football fans who may (or may not) support Cheltenham.

To maximise the attendance we will need to advertise in the Citizen, the Echo, the Cheltenham Town programme and anywhere else it makes sense to spread the word.

Yes, this may put money in the hands of those that many dislike ('hate' is a horrible word in this context), but if the cost/benefit numbers work it will go a long way to pay for the groundshare.

I have no doubt that the Board and Supporters Trust are aware of this and I hope that the costs and benefits are being (or will be) looked at.

Happy to assist if required.

I'm not knocking anything other than the fact that the Gloucester newspaper, who have in recent years given us minimal coverage and are now looking to postpone our tuesday night coverage until thursdays paper appear to be backing a campaign from Cheltenham's football team calling on all people from the county to support them.

There are other towns and a City with their own team who need support. Both from their populous and their newspaper. I'll re-iterate this when I return from the Corinium tomorrow where the crowd will probably be under 200.

Understand and agree with what you are saying BUT we may need to get into bed with them next season in order to raise our profile and our attendance.

Well done Cheltenham on achieving this coverage. How do we respond to the challenge?

Neil

This is nothing to do with Cheltenham, it's all about the Gloucester Citizen.

as we have seen in recent seasons, unless we have someone on the inside willing to put in extra hours we don't feature on the citizens radar and we won't until we are in a higher league than our neighbours. newspapers are dying out anyway, online prescence is the key.

Remember writing a letter just after the our near miss with Farnborough when a Shed Head passed comment about our lack of success. I kindly pointed out that at the time in the previous seasons since Brian Godfrey had taken over we had won a league title and County Cup. I then ended the letter by asking the Shed Head to remind us when GRFC last won a trophy, if his memory could remember that far back!!

Dont suppose anyone got the teamtalk article when they done the fans part and i was in it, with all the flags and was fan of the month !!!or some sort of tripe like that. They done it at the Bath home game if i remember correctly.

BobCarolgees

I was in that too, they put a question mark after my name!! Said we were the loudest away fans in non league football, also they had some Chelt fans up at Gateshead a few months after and team talk rubbed it in by saying that their support was no where as vociferous as their county neighbours or something like that.

I used to like Team Talk. Still NLP isn't bad at all. Just less shiny and accurate.

What year was that letter dated Neil? If my memory serves me right it was 1998 (or 99)?

Just proves the whole 6,000 average attendance at Gloucester rugby club back then and how fickle the city is with every sport, despite what they have you believe that this is a rugby mad City.

Neil

I'm upto september 1998 in the book so it was just before that
