City 2nds beat Newent Town 2 - 1 at Newent this afternoon.
A very gritty determined performance by the City Ladies; marred by Jo Thompson being taken to hospital with what appeared to be concussion. Jo had a head injury in the first half and refused to come off, she had already scored the opener for City; and wouldn't let the team down. At half time she was clearly in distress and but still wouldn't come off; in the second half she made some great runs and was a real threat to the Newent defence. Until the inevitable happened and she had to be taken off, and an ambulance called.
Newent had equalised in the first half.
So reduced to ten players, the City Ladies dug deep, and a rallying cry of "do it for Jo" was heard several times. With about nine minutes to go, Hayley Appleby hit a long shot, which the Newent keeper missed and it was 2 - 1. Sandra Saunders in goal for City made one superb save at the feet of a Newent forward, and some of our defending was absolutely superb. The last eight or so minutes I didn't think were ever going to end, as players on both sides were going down with cramp and injuries.
There were so many good performances today, the back four the midfield, Hayley looked sharp up front after her 35 day "break". In the end Player of the Match was awarded fittingly to Jo Thompson.
Hopefully like last season, this is the game where we turned the corner; and the team really believe in their abilities; they have the potential to win this League.
Well done all:notworthy:
